Liaison College in Kitchener has graduating students that go on to build a career in a variety of venues. When you think of culinary arts school, it may be because you are interested in becoming a chef or baker, but did you ever imagine a career as a business or restaurant owner?

Former students, Winnie and Lisa, completed the Chef de Cuisine Diploma at Liaison College and finished with the top Director's Award for their exemplary performance and professionalism. Having first met while attending the culinary course, the two clicked right away, complimenting each other’s personalities with their different styles and backgrounds. It was their mentor Chef Dean Michelson who introduced Winnie and Lisa to the previous owner of Downtown Crepe Café, a local restaurant specializing in sweet and savoury crepes that was in need of a new owner. After much discussion and research, Winnie and Lisa decided to purchase the café.

Building on the existing business model they felt had the potential for great success, Winnie and Lisa added their own tastes and styles to the café by overhauling the menu and expanding beyond crepes. In addition to the outstanding variety of crepes, Downtown Crepe and Café’s new menu includes an assortment of paninis, wraps, house made soups and salads, as well as smoothies and gourmet coffee beverages. They focused on sourcing a supplier for superior coffee and tea to help make them a destination for locals in need of a quality café.

The education and training from Liaison College taught them more than just how to improve the menu. Winnie and Lisa were both equipped with the necessary business management skills to operate a profitable restaurant. Under the guidance of Chef Elaina Ravo and Chef Dean, Winnie and Lisa were able to take their mutual passion for food and turn it into a career as business owners.
